Earlier this month, we recognized Women in Construction Week and the many women contributing to that field. As Women’s History Month comes to a close, we are also reflecting on the importance of mentorship, leadership development, and advancing women within the legal profession.
At KD, these efforts are supported through the leadership of our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee. We are pleased to share that Marsha Moses will serve as Chief Diversity Officer and Sha-Mekeyia Davis will serve as Deputy Chief Diversity Officer, while also leading the committee as its incoming co-chairs.
They step into these roles following the leadership of Charles Watkins, who helped establish the committee and guide its work in fostering mentorship, professional development, and meaningful engagement within the legal community.
As they step into these leadership roles, we asked Marsha and Sha-Mekeyia to share why advancing women in the profession remains a priority:
Marsha Moses
Advancing women in the legal profession promotes opportunity and representation inside and outside of the courtroom. Although women make up a greater portion of law students, they remain underrepresented in senior legal roles. Ensuring they have equal access better reflects the current law student demographic and population at large. It also improves decision-making and business outcomes. The diverse perspectives they bring to the table ultimately leads to more balanced results and higher profits. Women in leadership roles are often the key players in instituting inclusive workplace policies, i.e., parental leave, cultural initiatives, and flexible work arrangements that benefit everyone.
As we look to the future, advancing women in the law also creates a pipeline for generations to come. Mentoring and role models make it possible for long-term success and progress because when younger generations see women in leadership roles it reinforces the idea that advancement is possible and attainable. When women are more visible in senior law firm roles and courtrooms, people are more likely to view the legal system as equitable and just for all. Advancing women in the law is not about equity for women, it enhances the integrity, professionalism, and legitimacy of the entire legal system.
Sha-Mekeyia Davis
Fostering an environment that supports professional development and leadership creates a space for women to not only succeed but to lead with confidence, clarity, and purpose. When women are equipped with the resources to succeed, mentorship, and opportunities to grow, they are empowered to break barriers and elevate their voices, while shaping the future of the legal profession both in and out of the courtroom.
As Co-Chair of our DEI Committee, I firmly believe that investing in women’s growth strengthens not only individual careers, but the integrity and innovation of our firm and the legal profession as a whole. By championing equity and leadership, we build a culture where every woman is seen, supported, and inspired to rise, paving the path for those not far behind her.
Through leadership, mentorship, and collaboration, we remain committed to supporting the advancement of women across the legal profession and the communities we serve.
