Webinar Debrief – Reading the Roof: Evaluating Wind Damage in Hurricane Claims

Our team recently presented a webinar discussing common roofing systems, hurricane-related wind damage, and practical considerations that can help adjusters evaluate causation, document findings, and navigate complex roof claims.

Hurricane roof claims often hinge on a critical question: Is the damage truly storm-related, or are other factors at play?

Here are a few practical takeaways for adjusters:
• Not all roof damage is wind damage. Installation defects, aging materials, foot traffic, and prior repairs can create conditions that resemble storm-related damage.
• Documentation matters. Thorough photographs, inspection notes, and weather data can become key evidence if coverage decisions are later challenged.
• Consider causation early. The focus should not only be on what is damaged, but why it was damaged.
• Expert involvement may be warranted when damage patterns are unclear, multiple causes are possible, or significant roof replacement demands are being made.
• Evidence preservation is critical. Once roofing materials are removed or replaced, important information may be lost forever.

Bottom Line: The strongest hurricane claim investigations don’t just identify damage—they determine the cause of the damage. Early documentation, careful evaluation of roof conditions, and a focus on causation can help reduce disputes and support well-reasoned claim decisions.
