overview

F. John Caldwell, Jr., a native of the Philadelphia area, is an experienced trial attorney with clients ranging from large companies, to the city government in Atlantic City, to small businesses and individuals. He obtained his undergraduate and law degrees from Rutgers University. He distinguished himself in law school as a member of the Rutgers Law Journal, publishing a Note on the topic of private Superfund litigation, and was a research assistant for Michael Dorf, a renowned constitutional law professor and author.

Since graduating from Rutgers Law School in 1993, John has practiced in a variety of litigation areas including medical malpractice defense, environmental law, contract, class action, civil rights, patent infringement, and insurance defense in the areas of premises and auto negligence. In addition, he has participated in special counsel investigations into alleged wrongdoing at major utility companies in the New York and Philadelphia metropolitan areas. He was a key team member for Atlantic City in the development of former municipal lands into multi-billion dollar casino resorts. He has litigated and negotiated the settlement of hundreds of complex civil cases.

John most recently was a partner at a nursing home liability defense firm in St. Petersburg, Florida, where he defended nursing homes, assisted living facilities, skilled nursing facilities, and their professional staff/affiliates, in state courts in Florida and New York. From 2009-2019, John litigated catastrophic injury cases in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims in Washington, DC, representing petitioners in the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program. Over the course of that ten-year span, John tried dozens of cases and settled hundreds more. He continuously trained new attorneys, mentoring them through the entire litigation process.

John is a member of the Bars of the States of Florida, New York and New Jersey. He is admitted to practice before the United States Courts of Appeals for the Federal and Third Circuits, the United States Court of Federal Claims, and the United States District Courts for the Middle District of Florida, the Southern District of New York and the District of New Jersey.

A veteran of the United States Coast Guard, John served from 1980 through 1984 aboard Coast Guard Cutters Red Oak and Duane. As a crew member on the Coast Guard Cutter Red Oak, his work entailed keeping aids to navigation on station and operating in the Port of Philadelphia and the Delaware River. After graduation from the Navy’s Quartermaster School, he was transferred to the Coast Guard Cutter Duane where he participated as a navigator in search and rescue, smuggling interdiction, and maritime law enforcement patrols.

He lives in the Tampa Bay area with his wife and sons. He is active in Temple Emanu-El in Sarasota and has been a Scout leader both in New Jersey and Florida since 2005.
