overview

Ben Houston King focuses his practice on appellate litigation, first party property and insurance coverage matters.

Ben is a third-generation native Floridian, born and raised in Ocala. Growing-up, his family owned and operated Wayne's Dry Cleaners on Silver Springs Boulevard, and he attended St. John Lutheran School from elementary through high school. Ben’s family still resides in Ocala, where his brother ran Pet Palace: Nutrition and Boutique, and his mother works as a mental health counselor for the Florida State prison system.

He received both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Legal Studies from the University of Central Florida in 2015. He graduated with honors from the University of Florida Levin College of Law in December of 2017 where he ranked fourth in his class and was the recipient of three book awards. While in law school, Ben served as the President of the school's Honor Committee and presided over Student Conduct Hearings for both undergraduate and law school students facing disciplinary actions. Ben also participated as a Certified Legal Intern for UF Law's Intimate Partner Violence Assistance Clinic where he helped survivors of domestic violence obtain protection against abusers through court-ordered injunctions.

After law school at the University of Florida, Ben passed the Florida Bar in February 2018 and was invited to be the head of legal compliance and an assistant to the lead in-house counsel for a start-up commercial cannabis and medical marijuana company based in Seattle with operations in California, Hawaii, Iowa, Oregon, and Washington state. Ben oversaw legal compliance for all operations in the company and assisted with the negotiations and drafting of the first collective bargaining agreement for retail cannabis workers in the State of Washington. Ben organized volunteer and community service projects, including organizing a fundraiser for the 2018 Camp Fire in California and a company-wide "Sock Drive" to collect and donate the most requested clothing item at shelters: Socks.

Ben took and passed the California State bar exam in February of 2019, but did not seek admission, choosing instead to return home to Central Florida and become an Assistant Public Defender for the Ninth Circuit in Kissimmee, Florida. Ben worked with hundreds of clients from all sorts of backgrounds, helping them through some of the most difficult times in their lives. Ben helped numerous clients facing domestic violence battery, driving under the influence (DUI), and other misdemeanor or traffic-related offenses in county court and assisted people with felony charges in circuit court as well. Ben had over ten jury trials during his tenure at the Public Defender's office and has a proven track record of success.
